Out of the Horrible Pit

on February 10, 2012

“I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.  He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet on a rock, and established my goings.”  Psalm 40:1-2

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you couldn’t see a way out?  Sometimes those situations are brought upon us by the circumstances in our lives.  Sometimes we may stumble over what seems like a “small” sin in our eyes and end up in a horrible pit.  Other times we may dive head first into something we know we shouldn’t be in.

No matter how we get there, we’re all most likely going to feel like we’re in a horrible pit stuck in the miry clay at some point in our lives.  The real question is not how we got there, but how long are we going to stay there?  Many times I think we feel like since we are the ones who got ourselves into a mess, we have to be the ones to get ourselves out.  Maybe we feel like circumstances beyond our control got us into a bind we can’t get out of and it feels hopeless to even try.

When we come to realize that God is our only way out, that He is our strength, that’s when He will help us.  He will set our feet upon a rock and establish our goings.  Today I challenge you to survey your surroundings.  If you find yourself in a horrible pit, realize that the only way out is by trusting in God.  Draw yourself closer to Him through prayer and Bible study.  He will give you the help and strength you need to get out.

“Behold the eye of the Lord is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy; To deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine.  Our soul waiteth for the Lord:  he is our help and our shield.”  Psalm 33:18-20
