The Consequences of Sin

on February 9, 2012

So many times I’ve heard people try to justify their sin by saying that it isn’t anyone’s business but their own or it doesn’t affect anyone but themselves.  This mindset couldn’t be any further from the truth.  Numbers 16 tells how Korah, Dathan, and Abiram’s sin caused not only them, but also their wives and children to be swallowed up by the Earth.  2 Samuel 11 describes David’s sin with Bathsheba.  David’s sin brought death and trouble to his own family as well.  Because of Ahab’s sin in 1 Kings 21, his sons would suffer the consequences throughout the rest of their lives.

No matter how great or small the sin seems, it always has consequences that will affect you and the people around you.  Your sins affect your brothers and sisters in Christ and the image of Christians in general.  This is why we are reminded in 1 Thessalonians 5:22 to “Abstain from all appearance of evil.”  Our actions not only affect us, but also affect our families and friends.  We must be careful in everything we do.

Today I challenge you to think of your family and friends in every decision you make.  The right choices you make uplift the kingdom of God, but the wrong choices lead to serious consequences for everyone in your life.

“Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bring forth death.”  James 1:15
