God Connect: Daily Renewing Your Mind, Body, and Spirit

Take Up Thy Cross

on March 1, 2012

“And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.”  Luke 9:23

Being a Christian isn’t always a bed of roses.  It’s absolutely true that our relationship with God can grow sweeter each day, but sometimes enjoying the roses doesn’t happen until we endure the thorns.  Jesus knew that following Him wouldn’t always be easy, and that’s why He asked the disciples in Luke 9 to deny themselves in order to follow Him. He knew it wouldn’t be an easy road for them, by He also knew the end result would be worthwhile.

Jesus is asking us to do the same things today: deny ourselves, take up our crosses, and follow Him.  Many times we must put our goals and aspirations aside to follow God.  We must recognize His plans for us and give the Holy Spirit leadership in our lives.  Doing this requires much discipline that can only come through a sincere effort to serve God.

Today I challenge you to deny yourself, take up your cross, and submit yourself to God so that you’ll be prepared to understand what it means when He says, “Follow me.”

“For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake shall find it.”  Luke 9:24
