Laying Up Treasures

on January 9, 2012

Where is your treasure?  What is it that you value most in your life?  Are you looking for fame or fortune?  Do you work for the satisfaction of owning material things?  Are your family and friends the most important thing in your life?  In Matthew 6:19-20 Jesus instructs us to “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal.”

We know that this life is only temporary and whatever we have on this earth will one day be destroyed, yet we work like crazy and run ourselves to death chasing after earthly things.  Many times the more we get, the more we want.  Then, we are stuck in an endless cycle of trying to obtain more.

Although this is the mentality of the vast majority of the people on this earth, God is calling us to something more.  He bids us to lay up for ourselves treasures in heaven.  We can do this by reading our Bibles, attending church on a regular basis, witnessing to others, communicating with God through prayer, seeking the will He has for our lives, helping others, developing relationships with other Christians, and most importantly by accepting Christ as our Savior and deciding to live for Him.

My challenge for you today is to examine your heart and life to see where you’re laying up your treasures.  Is God and His kingdom the most important thing in your life?  Do you spend your time working for things on earth or laying up your treasures in heaven?  Maybe you need to make some changes. Following God and seeking after Him is a very important decision that requires commitment on your part. “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”  Matthew 6:21
